Five major retailers have decided to pull MyPillow products from their stores, according to MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell.
Lindell told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS Kohl’s, Bed Bath & Beyond, Wayfair, HEB Stores and Today’s Shopping Choice will no longer carry his Chaska-based brand.
"It’s ‘cancel culture.’ It’s what’s been happening to a lot of businesses," Lindell said.
He said the retailers informed him of their decisions amid his current dispute with Dominion, a voting machine manufacturer.
Lindell said he has been ‘boisterous’ in his support for President Donald Trump and claims of election fraud, which are still unproven. He said big box stores are being pressured to drop his products because of his political ideology.
"They get attacked online, on social media, so the bots and trolls attack them," Lindell explained. "They’ve called, one after the other now, saying, ‘We can’t carry MyPillow.’"
Dominion sent Lindell a letter on Jan. 8, demanding that he "retract his defamatory accusations immediately and issue a public apology," saying they are prepared to initiate legal action if he does not comply.
"They thought I would go, ‘Oh, please don’t sue me. Please Dominion!’ Well, I welcome it! Come on, bring it on! Bring it on, let’s show the United States what you did," Lindell said. "Please sue me. Please, because then they have to disclose their evidence that they have."
The company has already filed a defamation lawsuit against lawyer Sidney Powell for the same reasons after the attorney represented Trump in a series of unsuccessful lawsuits contesting the election outcome.
Lindell said he is not worried about big-box stores pulling his products.
MyPillow currently employs 2,500 people and he said this past year has been ‘busier than ever.’
"What happens in a boycott, if you stand firm, all your people that support you are going to buy more," Lindell said. "Every time this happens, my business doubles or goes up threefold."
Dave Vang, a retail expert in the University of St. Thomas Department of Finance, said boycotts are typically done at the consumer level and it is relatively rare for retailers to drop products over politics.
"It’s so obvious that the country is sort of in a 50/50 split, so for companies to take a stand on politics or ideology, you are potentially alienating half of your customer base no matter which side of the issue you’re going on," Vang said.
So far, only two retailers have returned 5 EYEWITNESS News’ request for comment.
Today’s Shopping Choice, a Canadian shopping channel, confirmed they are ‘no longer selling MyPillow.’
A Bed Bath and Beyond spokesperson provided this statement:
"We are continually improving our product assortment, which includes plans to offer an array of unique and exclusive Owned Brands from Spring 2021. As previously announced, we have been rationalizing our assortment to discontinue a number of underperforming items and brands. This includes the MyPillow product line. Our decisions are data-driven, customer-inspired and are delivering substantial growth in our key destination categories.
