Twin Cities Salvation Army in need of volunteers to deliver sweet thank-you

The Twin Cities Salvation Army needs your help delivering a sweet thank you to someone in your life that’s making a difference.

Friday, June 4, marks the Salvation Army’s 83rd National Donut Day and they need 1,000 volunteers to help with one simple task: delivering donuts to someone you love and appreciate, like a teacher, a neighbor, a first responder or friend.

"So many people have come alongside the Salvation Army along with other agencies, our first responders, all to help our community and the greater Twins Cities get through the pandemic, so we want to celebrate that and thank them for everything they’ve been doing," said Maj. Scott Shelbourn, divisional secretary and Twin Cities commander of the Salvation Army.

Donut Day is a tradition that dates back to World War I. Back then, "Donut Lassies," as they were called, would make sweet treats in soldiers’ helmets for the men fighting in the war. The doughnuts were mean to be a comforting reminder of home. They served thousands of donuts a day for U.S. troops.

This year, the Twin Cities Salvation Army’s goal is to deliver 1,000 dozen doughnuts. Doughnuts will be available for pickup June 4 from 7–9 a.m. at Salvation Army locations in Blaine, Burnsville, Roseville and St. Paul. Click here to sign up to volunteer.
