Police: Indiana man in Eau Claire stabbing has died
An Indiana man has been identified as the victim of a fatal stabbing in Eau Claire on Thanksgiving.
According to an update Wednesday from the Eau Claire Police Department, 37-year-old Travis Lee Smith died as a result of a stab wound to the chest. The manner of death has been reported as a homicide.
Police responded to the 600 block of Franklin Street at about 1 a.m. on Nov. 26 after receiving a report of a stabbing. When officers arrived, they found Smith with a stab wound to his chest and began providing critical aid. Meanwhile, a witness told officers that another man, identified as 51-year-old Kelly B. Weiberg, had allegedly stabbed Smith.
Police reported learning Weiberg had gotten into a fight with Smith when he allegedly stabbed Smith. Weiberg admitted during questioning that he was intoxicated and that he remembered using a knife against Smith after Smith punched him several times.
Weiberg was taken into custody and the Eau Claire County District Attorney’s Office has filed charges of aggravated battery and second-degree recklessly endangering safety against him, according to police. Weiberg is currently being held in the Eau Claire County Jail.
