At Elm Creek Park Reserve, the season has already been a busy one.
"We’ve definitely had a good crowd out already," Julie Matzek, with Elm Creek, said.
And the new snow is a welcome sight.
"I’m excited about the snow, it’s nice to have real snow," one Elm Creek visitor said.
"I’m excited especially before Christmas," another added.
But like many other businesses, ski hills and trails are also facing changes due to COVID-19.
Reservations are now required at Elm Creek for cross country skiing.
"It is an all-new system because of COVID-19, so we’re really trying to restrict the number of skiers that we’re allowing both in our rental building at one time getting equipment on, sizing them and everything, but also out on the trails," Matzek said.
Reservations will also be required for tubing when it opens, likely next week.
"I am anticipating a busy winter, everyone’s trying to get outside changing gears from indoor sports to outdoor sports and we’re here to help them out with that," she added.
At Powder Ridge in Kimball, new online reservations will help them keep track of numbers and allow for distancing.
"It is very easy, the only time they’re not available is if we do reach capacity," Shelby Hedtke, at Powder Ridge, said.
There are some Minnesota resorts that are already full for certain days over the holiday break.
Powder Ridge is not but is asking guests to plan ahead.
"It’s Christmas break, we are expecting it to be a little busier than normal so just know before you go, check the website and make sure you have the tickets before you show up," Hedtke said.
Masks are required in lines and on lifts, and chalets are only open for bathrooms and small snacks.
"We’ve got fish houses in our parking lot that households are coming with and warming up in there, we’ve got people in lawn chairs in the parking lot using their vehicles as a warming place," Hedtke said.
As the snow falls, outdoor recreation areas say they are ready and waiting.
"We’re all in this together and we just appreciate the support so much, everyone being flexible and being willing to go with what we have right now," she added.
