Woman dies after ATV falls through ice on Kabekona Lake
A woman died Saturday after an ATV she was on fell through the ice on Kabekona Lake in Lakeport Township.
The Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office said deputies received a report that an ATV had fallen through ice on the lake at 6:18 p.m. on Saturday.
An investigation indicates 61-year-old Kenneth Peterson, of Brooklyn Park, was operating a 2021 Polaris Ranger with his wife, 60-year-old Rose Peterson, and daughter, 29-year-old Karissa Peterson, as passengers. They’d been fishing and were headed back to their cabin when the ATV broke through the ice in about 18 feet of water and submerged with the three inside its enclosed cab.
Two other family members were following the ATV on snowmobiles and saw the ATV fall into the water. The sheriff’s office said 36-year-old Ryan Peterson, of Coon Rapids, was able to pull all three of the victims out of the water and began performing CPR on his mother, who was unresponsive.
Peterson and his son were then able to take all three victims by snowmobile to their cabin, where they were met by first responders.
Rose Peterson was taken to a hospital before being airlifted to another hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Karissa Peterson was also taken to a hospital for treatment.
The incident remains under investigation.
