Duluth’s Kozy Bar building catches fire again

Firefighters in Duluth battled flames Sunday at Pastoret Terrace, also known as the former Kozy Bar and apartment building.

WDIO-TV, a Hubbard-owned station, reports Duluth Fire Department crews responded to the building at about 10 a.m. and found smoke coming from second-floor windows and the roof. At about 4 p.m., firefighters were still "working to gain access to the building to put out any hot spots and to ensure there are no life safety issues inside," the department said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The historic building has been uninhabitable for a decade after a fire at the building in 2010. It was scheduled to be demolished this year but those plans were put on hold due to a court challenge from the building’s former owner, Eric Ringsred, according to WDIO.

According to WDIO, the Duluth Economic Development Authority approved a $135,000 construction contract for court-mandated maintenance on the building just last week. Duluth City Council is scheduled to vote on the contract on Nov. 9.
