Justice Department to monitor election sites around country, including Minneapolis

The Justice Department announced Monday that it will monitor election sites around the country, as it has done in the past.

According to a release from the Justice Department, the department will monitor jurisdictions around the country during the Nov. 3 election.

The Justice Department has historically monitored jurisdictions in the field.

The department will also take complaints of possible violations regarding federal voting rights through its call center at 800-253-3931.

“Federal law entrusts the Civil Rights Division with protecting the right to vote for all Americans,” said Eric S. Dreiband, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division. “Our federal laws protect the right of all American citizens to vote without suffering discrimination, intimidation, and harassment. The work of the Civil Rights Division around each federal general election is a continuation of its historical mission to ensure that all of our citizens can freely exercise this most fundamental American right.”

Jurisdictions in Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin will be monitored in person by Justice Department Officials.

The Minnesota jurisdiction being monitored is the city of Minneapolis.
