Sentencing set for man convicted of shooting Waseca officer Arik Matson in head

Sentencing is set Friday for the man convicted of shooting Waseca police officer Arik Matson in the head.
The incident happened in January; the BCA reported four officers responded to the 900 block of Third Avenue Southeast after receiving a suspicious person report. Upon arrival, officers encountered a man who fired a shot that struck Matson in the head, according to the BCA. Officers then returned fire.
Tyler Janovsky, 37, was charged with three counts of first-degree attempted murder of a peace officer in connection with the incident.
In the months that followed, Matson underwent reconstruction surgery as well as physical and speech therapy.
The sentencing is less than a month after Matson was able to return home. Last month, the Waseca community held a welcome-home parade for Matson, which his family also attended.

Matson’s wife, Megan, thanked her husband’s supporters as well as the medical professionals who have taken care of him this past year.

Janovsky pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree attempted murder of a peace officer. His plea agreement calls for a 35-year sentence in prison.
According to court documents, Janovsky told a family member he planned to commit suicide by police a few days prior to the shooting.
A criminal complaint also stated Janovsky has a criminal history, including second-degree accessory to murder and making terroristic threats.
