The fire marshal is investigating a fire that heavily damaged a historic hotel in Northfield.
Flames broke out at the Archer House River Inn around 3:30 p.m. Thursday. Firefighters were on scene for more than 24 hours, putting out the fire and dealing with hotspots.
"We are absolutely heartbroken because it really is an anchor of the town. We’re just losing part of our heart," said Susan Hvistendahl, a historian in Northfield. "Northfield is in sorrow right now, grievous sorrow."
The Archer House was built in 1877 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It went through a $1.1 million restoration in 2011 and currently houses 35 guest rooms, two restaurants, a bar and several businesses.
"This is a big a big loss to the community and it kind of tugs at your heart," said Barbara Evans, who lives in Northfield and visited the scene Friday.
Damage reported after fire at historic Archer House in Northfield
Many onlookers spoke about Archer House being a beloved gathering place for generations.
"It’s really sad, especially during the holiday season. It’s really special to come down and see the Archer House, so it will be different this year for sure," said Paige Koch, a Northfield resident.
Northfield Fire Chief Gerry Franek said it appears the fire started in a restaurant kitchen and quickly spread to other parts of the building. He said it was very difficult to get the flames under control because the old building did not have many fire stops in the walls.
"That means the fire has a raceway to go from the first floor to the second floor to the third floor," Franek said.
Franek said there is no indication the fire is suspicious.
He said no one inside the building was hurt but two firefighters had to be checked out at the hospital for over-exertion and hypothermia. Both are expected to be okay.
Franek said there is pretty significant fire, smoke and water damage throughout the building.
It is unclear whether the building can be saved and restored, due to the extent of the damage.
