UPDATE: Suspect taken into custody after hours-long search in St. Joseph

UPDATE: A suspect has been taken into custody after an hours-long search in St. Joseph on Thursday.

According to the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect was taken into custody Thursday night.

The Minnesota State Patrol identified the suspect as 29-year-old Devan Dajon Wilson.

According to the State Patrol, Wilson was finally taken into custody at about 6:30 p.m. near Sagatagan Lake on the campus of St. John’s University, nearly 11 hours after the traffic stop that led to the pursuit and search.

More than a dozen law enforcement agencies were involved in the search for Wilson after he allegedly assaulted a trooper Thursday morning and fled a traffic stop.

The State Patrol said the trooper that was assaulted suffered multiple fractures to his jaw and will need surgery.

Wilson was arrested without force, according to the State Patrol, but was then taken to a hospital for observation and will then be taken to Stearns County Jail.

An hours-long search for a potentially armed suspect in St. Joseph remains underway Thursday evening.

According to an update just after 4 p.m., several agencies reported they believe the suspect remains inside of a perimeter they have established.

The Minnesota State Patrol reported 16 agencies are involved in the search.

Law enforcement officials are asking those in the area to call 911 if they see anything suspicious.

"Do not approach the suspect, who may be armed," the state patrol stated.

The search began Thursday morning, when law enforcement officials asked those at and near St. John’s University to remain indoors.

According to the state patrol, troopers and Stearns County Sheriff’s Office deputies began a pursuit after the suspect fled from a traffic stop.

State patrol had stopped the suspect in the area of St. John’s University on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

After a preliminary breath test, the suspect punched a trooper and drove away from the scene, according to the state patrol.

State patrol pursued the suspect vehicle along Interstate 94 and were able to stop the vehicle using spike strips. Troopers reported observing the suspect had something in hand, possibly a firearm.

The suspect then fled from the scene on foot.

Authorities believe the suspect robbed an individual, taking their clothes, cell phone and car key. State patrol says the suspect may have changed clothes.

The vehicle belonging to the victim of the robbery has been accounted for.

K9 units and an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) are also assisting in the search for the suspect.

St. John’s University is currently on lockdown.
