Life Time files request for state data regarding COVID transmission in health clubs

Life Time Fitness announced Friday that it filed a request with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s office for data related to COVID-19 spread in fitness clubs.
The move comes on the day new restrictions, which include closing health and fitness centers, go into effect in Minnesota.

Life Time released a copy of its request for information to the news media. The letter from Erik Lindseth, general counsel for Lifetime Fitness, says, in part,
"I am requesting access to government data under the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act…All data and analyses tracing or associating the spread or transmission of COVID-19 to or with any gymnasisum, fitness facility, or pool. For purposes of this request, any reference to gymnasium, fitness facility, or pool includes any Place of Public Accommodation specified in Governor Tim Walz’s Emergency Executive Order 20-99…"
Gov. Walz was asked about the request on a Minnesota Department of Health call Friday afternoon.
"We will gladly provide all the data they request according to law, both spirit and letter of law," the governor said. "So whatever is in their data practice request we will put out in as timely a manner as we can. Once again I will acknowledge their frustrations and their desire to do this are not malicious. They are simply looking out for their interests which they should. I have to make these decisions predicated on public health…"
Lifetime Fitness centers will close tonight, although their spa and physical therapy operations will be allowed to remain open.
The new restrictions on health clubs and other businesses like bars and restaurants are set to last four weeks, but Walz said it’s possible that they could get extended.
