The future of high school sports was up for discussion Monday.

The Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) addressed the recent pandemic restrictions that went into effect Friday.

What you need to know about Minnesota’s new COVID-19 restrictions

For the next four weeks, youth and adult sports have been put on pause to help curb the spread of COVID-19.

During a virtual meeting Monday, the MSHSL board placed an emphasis on making sure the state is in a good place with its COVID-19 situation before a plan for a revised season could happen.

Currently, board members are working to figure out the best way to handle a winter season safely.

Monday’s meeting was a committee meeting and no action will yet be taken; on Dec. 3, there will be a normal board meeting during which Minnesotans will likely get an idea of what a shortened winter sports season could look like.

As it now stands, that season could start Dec. 19, but each sport is unique and presents its own challenges.

Dance was mentioned multiple times during Monday’s meeting because it was already in season when the new restrictions were set.

Coaches have asked if they can meet virtually and other coaches in different sports have asked for that as well.

The board is working to iron out details on that front and hopes to have more by the Dec. 3 meeting.

The board stated that unless the COVID-19 situation in the state gets better, the winter season will continue to be pushed. That is starting to create concern with spring sports.

The board is continuing to work on what a potential winter season starting Dec. 19 could look like, including a post season with tournaments.
