Tuesday, police are investigating an early-morning shooting in north Minneapolis.

Minneapolis Police Department officers responded at about 1:25 a.m. to the 3800 block of Girard Avenue North. Upon arrival, they found a man, believed to be in his 50s, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound inside a vehicle.

Officers began CPR, however the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Homicide investigators responded to the scene to assist in interviewing people who may have seen or heard something. Crime Lab personnel also collected evidence at the scene.

The shooting could mark the city’s 77th homicide of the year. There were 48 homicides last year, according to police. Meanwhile, 500 people have been shot this year in Minneapolis.

"That’s staggering; that is so much higher than any previous year that we’ve been counting," John Elder, public information officer, said. "That’s higher than 1998, when we had our highest amount of murders."

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or submit information online, referencing case number 20-395958.

The medical examiner is expected to release the man’s identity and official cause of death in the days to come.
