Winter weather creates smooth ice on Lake Minnetonka

Minnesota's weather this winter has created extremely smooth ice on Lake Minnetonka.

A large crowd of people were out on the lake enjoying the ice in Excelsior on Sunday.

With little snow and warmer temperatures, the ice almost seems like glass.

Some say they've never seen ice like this on the lake in the middle of January.

"It's crazy rare," Jackie Anderson of Excelsior said. "We actually have friends who have ice-skated across the whole lake, which I've lived here my whole life never done. So it's crazy."

Wayzata Bait and Tackle told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS the ice depth on Lake Minnetonka ranges between 10 and 17 inches.
