March 15, 2019 07:11 AM

A group of Minnesotans have already moved out of their homes Friday morning due to floodwaters flowing into their community in Jordan.

Roughly 1,000 people live in the Valley Green Mobile Home Park and many have been participating in a voluntary evacuation given the current conditions. Many are staying in nearby shelters.

American Red Cross volunteers told KSTP about 40 are staying at a community center volunteer space set up to help those affected by the flooding.

"I think people are always a little surprised when there's a natural disaster because they don't realize how it might impact their home," Red Cross volunteer Chelsey Griggs said.

The Jordan police chief said standing water hasn't affected the entire community, however, precautions have been taken, including ensuring ambulances and other emergency vehicles are able to move along streets.

Red Cross volunteers said they plan to have the shelter in place as long as is needed.
