KSTP Chief Meteorologist Dave Dahl said thunderstorms were moving through the Twin Cities metro area early Thursday afternoon, producing heavy rain, small hail and gusty winds. Those storms are expected to last through 3 or 3:30 p.m.

But Dahl said stronger storms are expected after 5 p.m. And he said the first batch of storms could cause enough heating to cause energy in the atmosphere to climb, setting the state for possible severe weather in the second wave.
