Storms before the swelter! Dangerous heat likely this weekend – Chris

After a stretch of pop-up showers and muggy afternoons, attention now turns to another weather headline: our first true heat wave of the season.
Scattered thunderstorms may pop up early this evening, followed by a quiet, partly cloudy night. But by Thursday night into Friday, another round of showers and storms moves in, some of which could bring strong storms or locally heavy rain. Keep an umbrella nearby, especially for Juneteenth evening plans, but most storms would be overnight while we were sleeping.
Another round of storms is possible on Friday night. Once again, this would be while we were sleeping, but there is a chance of strong to severe storms for central and northern Minnesota.
Once we get past Friday night’s storms, the weekend is all about the heat. Saturday and Sunday are both Forecast First Alert days, as temperatures soar into the mid-90s with tropical humidity. Saturday could challenge a century-old record high of 95°, and Sunday’s high of 96° would be the hottest day of 2025 so far.
This kind of heat isn’t just uncomfortable—it’s dangerous. This is why most of the state is under an Extreme Heat Watch from the National Weather Service. Heat is the number one weather-related killer in the U.S., often impacting vulnerable groups the most. If you’re planning to be outdoors, especially at festivals, sports events, or at the lake, take frequent breaks, drink plenty of water, and don’t forget to check on pets and neighbors.
Storm chances return Monday night into Tuesday as a cooler, unsettled pattern begins to take shape.
