A woman in serious condition was taken to a nearby hospital after a carjacking led to a crash into a Minneapolis garage Thursday morning.
According to authorities at the scene along the 5700 block of Sander Drive, the crash happened just after 5 a.m.
Police spokesperson John Elder said the carjacking happened around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday in the area of 3600 18th Avenue South. There, multiple people accosted a man and stole his vehicle, Elder said.
Witnesses who called 911 said they saw the car driving "extremely recklessly" Thursday morning. Before officers could find the car, it rolled and crashed into the garage.
Immediately following the crash, three people in the vehicle fled the scene.
Authorities worked to remove the upside-down vehicle from the garage and extricate the woman still inside the vehicle.
Police have interviewed the woman and are investigating the incident.
Neighbors passed by the damage Thursday in shock.
Billy Hart lives down the street and saw the hole in the garage during his daily walk.
"This is a surprise," Hart said. "Anybody could have got killed, you know, catching the bus early in the morning for work."
Spencer Pope, who owns and manages the property, told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS it's likely the garage will need to be torn down.
"It was sad to see the mural go," Pope said pointing to the side of the garage that faces the street. He said the mural was painted last summer by kids in the neighborhood.
