A 28-year-old man was in critical condition at an Eau Claire hospital after he was ejected from his vehicle during a crash early Saturday morning in Barron County, authorities say.

A release from the Barron County Sheriff's Department in Wisconsin stated deputies responded to a call reporting a one-vehicle crash on County Road A and 18 1/2 Street east of Dallas at around 2 a.m. Saturday.

Preliminary investigation shows Phillip Kurtz of Dallas was traveling westbound on County Road A when his vehicle went onto the shoulder. It is believed he overcorrected, causing his vehicle to go into the eastbound lanes of the road, then off it, striking some trees. He was airlifted to Mayo Eau Claire where he was listed in critical condition.

The release said alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.
