Drivers in the south metro are in for a major travel disruption as the Minnesota Department of Transportation prepares to close down two heavily-used roads this weekend.

For the second weekend in a row, Interstate 494 is closing. This time around, the westbound lanes will shut down from Highway 100 in Bloomington to Highway 212 in Eden Prairie starting at 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday.

The eastbound lanes are closing too, but for a shorter duration, beginning at 10 p.m. Friday until 5 p.m. Saturday. Crews are in the process of building an entrance ramp from East Bush Lake Road to I-494 westbound. The detour takes motorists to Highway 62. Learn more about the project.

Keep this in mind: Highway 62 is shutting down as well. The road will close in Minneapolis from I-35W to Highway 5 (by the airport). Both directions will close starting at 10 tonight until 5 Monday morning. According to MnDOT, westbound traffic on Highway 62 will stay open to Hiawatha to allow access to federal and state buildings.

The work is part of a resurfacing project and MnDOT says it will only take them one weekend to complete it. Motorists will be diverted to I-494. Learn more about the project.

Meanwhile, 31st Street near I-35W is shutting down as part of the larger I-35W: Downtown to the Crosstown Project. The road closes between Stevens and Second avenues. The detour takes drivers over to Lake Street starting at 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday.
