Weekend closure: I-35W shuts down north of downtown Minneapolis

June 21, 2019 07:29 AM

Weekend closures seem to be the norm around the Twin Cities lately and this weekend will be no exception.

Both directions of Interstate 35W will close between Interstate 94 in Minneapolis and Highway 280 in Roseville starting at 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday.

Minnesota Department of Transportation officials said crews will begin closing ramps along I-35W at 8 p.m. Friday. Crews will demolish the Fifth Street pedestrian bridge. The new bridge opens in late August.

Those heading to "Back to the '50s" or the Twin Cities Pride Festival this weekend can bet on heavy traffic on the detour route. Drivers are advised to use I-94 and Highway 280 to get around the closure.

In the west metro, the westbound lanes of Highway 55 will be closed for work at the Medicine Lake Road intersection in Plymouth.

The shut down begins at 7 p.m. Friday and continues until 5 a.m. Monday. Drivers will be diverted around the area between South Shore Drive and Evergreen Lane. Learn more about the project here.
