Storm Wreaks Havoc on South Metro Intersection

In the metro area, it was the southern suburbs that felt the brunt of a stiff winter storm Monday.

And motorists in parts of the south metro found it tough going during the evening rush hour.

The Burnsville intersection at Nicollet Avenue and Burnsville Parkway was particularly troublesome because of a steep grade on Nicollet. People like James Lenore went out of their way to help drivers whose wheels were spinning in place trying to get up the hill.

"For many of these drivers it is the fact they have their traction control on," Lenore said. "They need their wheels spinning to get the traction, and they have to remember to shut off their traction control and they can navigate situations like this hill."

Dozens of cars became stuck in the middle of Nicollet Avenue unable to get up the street. Some even parked their cars and decided to walk to their destinations.

Around 4 p.m. there was a three-car accident at the intersection. One driver, Phan Vang, said his car was struck by another car that had slid down Nicollet Avenue's steep grade.

"I could see that he was trying to brake, but his car was not stopping," Vang said. "And then his car just slid into my car from the other direction and then hit another car."

Burnsville Police responded to that accident within minutes; none of the drivers or passengers involved were seriously injured.
