It was a long and ugly commute Monday morning along Interstate 494 in the west metro, and an unexpected lane closure was to blame.

The ramp from I-494 southbound to Highway 62 in Eden Prairie was reduced to one lane during the morning commute and that resulted in a seven- to eight-mile backup along the interstate.

The work is related to a resurfacing project on Highway 62 that runs from Clearwater Drive to Tracy Avenue. Although the Minnesota Department of Transportation released details of the project in late June, there was no mention of impacts to I-494 commuters.

According to MnDOT's Dave Aeikens, the lane restriction on the I-494 ramp will last about 10 days.

Unfortunately, traffic delays along Highway 169 were just as severe, so there aren't too many options for getting around the traffic delays unless you take side roads.
