Traffic delays start as I-35W project begins in North Metro

April 09, 2019 10:40 PM

Traffic was slow along Intertstate 35W in the North Metro Tuesday evening. It’s just a preview of what’s to come once construction season really picks up.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation is preparing to add MnPASS lanes to the middle of about 12 miles of Interstate 35W between Roseville and Lino Lakes. According to the state, it will help traffic flow more quickly along the corridor.

The interstate is down to two lanes from County Road C to Mounds View Boulevard. It’s down to three lanes from Mounds View Boulevard to the northern Highway 10 interchange. The restrictions will be in place until November.

Noise walls will also be added.

Circle Pines Mayor Dave Bartholomay said he’s been working on the project for years.

“A lot of people don’t like roads getting repaired, they think it's just an inconvenience,” he said. “I love it because it means it's going to be better in the future. We've got to put up with a little bit of trouble for the next couple of summers but after that it's going to be better for the North Metro area.”

Bartholomay explained the project during Tuesday night’s City Council meeting.

He said the city is working with MnDOT and police to make sure the construction doesn’t cause other traffic issues.

“We’re watching to make sure they don’t peel off of one road and then clog up the other because you still have a lot of people that need to get back and forth to work,” said Bartholomay. “They have to get there somehow so we just want to make sure it's safe.”

More lane restrictions and ramp closures take effect at the end of April and in May. The project is expected to last three years.
