Minneapolis police said officers received a call reporting two suspicious vehicles possibly engaged in drug activity, according to a release sent out by Minneapolis Police Department spokesperson John Elder.

When officers approached one of the vehicles at the scene, the driver of the other vehicle, identified as 27-year-old Trevon McMorris, reportedly took off.

"As the officers were making contact and identifying the individuals, one of the vehicles took off, nearly striking the officer standing who was talking to the other vehicle," Elder said.

Officers followed that vehicle and when they arrived in the area of 36th Street and Aldrich Avenue, they found McMorris had struck another vehicle with his vehicle. The driver of that second vehicle was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner identified the victim as Jose Angel Madrid Salcido.

His wife said he was on his way home from work when the crash happened, just a few blocks from their house.

"We still can't believe this has happened to us," she said. "My husband was an exceptional man, a role model. He was everything to me and my daughter. We depended 100 percent on him. And, in just a moment, we were left with nothing."

The suspect's girlfriend also spoke with 5 EYEWITNESS News Thursday. She said McMorris sped off from police because he was scared, and he never meant for this tragedy to happen.

"I hope everyone can find it in their heart to forgive him," Bianca Harvey said. "He did not hurt this man intentionally. Please don't look at him as a murderer. I know he's not supposed to flee from the police, but he is not a murderer."

Several neighbors were outside when the crash happened.

"They pulled some stuff out of the car, I don't know if he had drugs or whatever, but they found some stuff in the car; I imagine that's probably why he was running," one neighbor said.

Police said they did find narcotics and what they are calling "concerning material" in McMorris's vehicle.

McMorris is currently in custody, according to authorities.

According to court records, McMorris has a history of traffic violations, including past convictions for driving with a suspended or revoked license and driving without proof of insurance. McMorris was also convicted after officers found he was in possession of marijuana during a traffic stop.

Police also said they have identified the second driver who was at the scene of the possible drug activity, but they have not yet been able to locate him.

The victim of the crash who died at the hospital has not yet been identified, police said.
