A stretch of Highway 65 between Interstate 694 and West Moore Lake Drive has reopened after Fridley police say a four vehicle collision led to a shooting Wednesday afternoon.
The highway reopened at about 9:30 p.m.
Fridley police report officers were dispatched to the intersection of Central Avenue NE (Highway 65) and Medtronic Parkway NE at around 4:20 p.m. Wednesday on a report of a personal injury crash.
A release states multiple callers reported one adult male involved in the crash was armed with a knife, and was reportedly attempting to assault one of the other drivers.
Fridley PD say 4 vehicles involved in the crash. A man in one of them started threatening others with a knife. Then a man not involved at all in the initial crash ends up shooting the man with the knife multiple times @KSTP— Brett Hoffland (@BrettHoffland) February 15, 2018
According to the release, witnesses also reported another motorist - who was not involved in the crash - had stopped to intervene. That motorist, whom the release describes as an adult male, was reportedly armed with a handgun.
Prior to the arrival of officers on the scene, the release alleges the motorist with the handgun fired it at the male reported to be armed with the knife. The male reported to be armed with the knife was struck several times.
He was transported from the scene with what are described as life-threatening injuries.
The man armed with the handgun reportedly remained at the scene and cooperated with officers after they arrived. Police are looking into whether or not the man can legally carry a firearm.
Another adult male involved in the crash suffered what are thought to be non-life threatening injuries.
The state patrol's incident report said the initial crash happened when a 2001 Dodge Ram driven by 33-year-old Simon Matthew Schiffler of Williston, North Dakota - traveling northbound on Highway 65 - struck a 2014 GMC Sierra driven by 57-year-old Irvin James Doyle of Ham Lake.
That caused the Sierra to strike a 2010 Jeep Liberty being driven by 40-year-old Jamie Lee Lacosse of Blaine. The Liberty then struck a 2005 Chevy Silverado being driven by 38-year-old Lisa Ann Panning of Ham Lake as the three vehicles were stopped at a red light at Medtronic Parkway.
"It's unfortunate, we're lucky that more people weren't injured in this incident," said Captain Ryan George of the Fridley Police Department.
The incident is under investigation by the Fridley Police Department, the Anoka County Sheriff's Department and the state patrol.
An incorrect street name based on initial information in a tweet from the state patrol has been corrected.
