The Stearns County Sheriff has identified the man who was driving a car that rolled into the Sauk River Tuesday as 40-year-old Catalino De Leon Alvardo of Rockville.

The sheriff's office responded to the report of a car in the river at 5:27 a.m. at the intersection of Sauk River Road and County Road 139.

First responders extricated Alvardo, who is also known in town as Jose Vasquez, from his 2000 Honda CR-V, which was found with the roof in the water. Alvardo was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said they think Alvardo may have applied his brake late as he came toward the T-shaped intersection, hit a yellow warning sign, then continued into a ditch, hit a tree, then flipped the vehicle on its roof into the river.

The investigation continues.
