Robbinsdale police say a driver is in custody after a pursuit early Monday morning that ended with the vehicle crashing in Brooklyn Center.

Robbinsdale Police said the pursuit began just after 2 a.m. when an officer ran a license plate on the suspect's vehicle which allegedly determined the vehicle had been stolen. The officer began to follow the vehicle while waiting for additional squad cars to assist.

The vehicle is alleged to have increased in speed and attempted to evade the officer by making what were termed as quick and erratic turns. The spokesperson said the officer then turned on lights and sirens, but the vehicle still failed to stop.

Cameras caught the chase and video showed the vehicle hitting railroad tracks at France Avenue just south of 50th Avenue before flipping.

Police told a KSTP crew at the scene the driver was taken to the hospital and was released.

A police spokesperson later said the driver was identified, and it was determined a warrant had been issued for the individual on an unrelated theft of motor vehicle offense.

The driver is currently at the Hennepin County Jail. Charges have not yet been filed.
