Motorists heading north to the Brainerd Lakes area can expect to see a lot of extra traffic congestion on area roadways.

The 37th annual National Hot Rod Association Nationals race is underway at Brainerd International Raceway. According to MnDOT, more congestion is expected this weekend than in past race weeks. The event wraps up on Sunday.

If you're thinking about using Highway 10 to get to central Minnesota, keep in mind that it's down to one lane in both directions from Big Lake to Clear Lake. Crews are in the process of reconstructing 14 miles of eastbound pavement. The work continues into October.  Learn more about the project.

It will be a more difficult commute for folks heading back to the Twin Cities along Interstate 35. A new traffic configuration is in place in the north metro between Forest Lake and Columbus.

The interstate is reduced to two lanes on the southbound side. The lanes are separated by concrete barriers and traffic needing to exit at Broadway Avenue should use the right lane. The lane restrictions will last for the next four months. Earlier this week, the northbound side fully opened to three lanes. Learn more about the project.
