Traffic is backed up on eastbound I-694 following a serious crash.

Part of eastbound Interstate 694 was closed in the north metro Friday evening due to a fatal crash, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

The stretch reopened around 8:30 p.m.

MnDOT said that side of the highway is closed at Interstate 94. Traffic is being diverted onto I-94.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a motorcyclist - 40-year-old Travis John Eckman - tried to pass a Volkswagen Passat driven by 63-year-old Thomas Eugene Ohs.

Eckman's motorcycle hit the back of the Passat and he lost control. Eckman was killed in the crash. He was not wearing a helmet, according to State Patrol.

Ohs was not injured.
