New Configuration in Place Along I-35W, I-94 Work Delayed

June 18, 2018 04:41 PM

A new configuration is in place along Interstate 35W in Minneapolis Monday morning thanks to the massive I-35W: Downtown to the Crosstown project.

I-35W northbound is down to three lanes from 43rd Street to 31st Street in south Minneapolis. There are two lanes for general traffic and one lane for MnPASS users. From 31st Street to I-94, there are three lanes open to everyone. Southbound has been reduced to two lanes for all traffic from I-94 to 43rd Street for the next year. In 2019, MnDOT will open 35W southbound to three lanes. The lane closures will stay in place for three years until the fall of 2021.

A new ramp closure is in place too. I-35W southbound to 35th Street closed on Friday night and won't reopen until the fall of 2020. The detour takes motorists to the ramp to 46th Street.

Meanwhile, I-94 westbound is scheduled to go down to two lanes near I-35W, between Chicago Avenue and Nicollet Avenue. It appears the weather has postponed those lanes restrictions for now, all lanes are open for the morning commute. Once the construction barrels go into place, they will stay there until sometime this fall.

The work is all related to the larger 35W: Downtown to the Crosstown project. Numerous bridges are getting repaired or being replaced, another MnPASS lane is being added to the southbound side of the interstate, crews are constructing a new transit station near Lake Street, and much more.
