Summer is winding down, but road construction is still going strong. And a series of major closures on Highway 62 are about to start in the southwest metro.
According to MnDOT, Highway 62 eastbound will close from I-494 to Highway 212 starting at 9 a.m. Wednesday September 5. The closure will last until Monday September 10. Traffic will be detoured to Highway 62 and Shady Oak Road.
Before the closure sets in, a couple of ramps will shut down beginning Tuesday September 4. The ramp from Highway 169 northbound to Highway 62 westbound closes until Monday September 10. The ramp from Gleason Road to Highway 62 eastbound will close until Saturday September 15.
"It's got to be done I suppose but it definitely makes it more difficult," Taylor Enos said.
The repaving project will require a total of four weekend closures that include one side of the highway being closed at a time from Highway 100 to I-494.
From 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, through 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10, eastbound Highway 62 will be closed.
Friday, Sept. 14, through the following Monday, westbound Highway 62 will be closed.
Friday, Sept. 21, eastbound Highway 62 will close again. It will reopen Monday, Sept. 24.
The westbound side of 62 will once again close on Friday, Sept. 28, and reopen Monday, Oct. 1.
"It seems like a bad idea and it sure is going to make a mess of things," Steve Porter said.
Follow the signed detour routes for these closures. And plan ahead and give yourself extra time to reach your destination.
