A 57-year-old man was killed in a two-vehicle crash in Wisconsin's Polk County Thursday, authorities say.

The Polk County Sheriff's Department said in a release that James Church of rural Luck was a passenger in a Dodge Journey SUV that was traveling east on County Road I in Balsam Lake when it collided with a Chevrolet Silverado truck heading in the opposite direction and being driven by 31-year-old Bryce Carlson of Burnsville.

The release said it is believed the vehicle Church was riding in, driven by 60-year-old Valerie Church, crossed the center line at a curve and entered the westbound lane. Carlson reportedly said he attempted to steer out of the way, but was unable to do so.

Both Valerie Church and Whitney Pederson, a passenger in the truck, were transported to Regions Hospital in St. Paul with serious injuries.

The release said heavy rain at the time of the crash is believed to be a contributing factor. The matter remains under investigation.
