Major delays expected with lane closures this weekend along I-494, I-94

There's bad news for drivers in the southeast metro this weekend.

For the second weekend in a row, there will be lane restrictions in place along Interstate 494.

The left lane of I-494 westbound will close between Highway 62 (old Highway 110) in Inver Grove Heights and I-35E in Eagan starting at 6 p.m. Friday. By 9 p.m., eastbound traffic will be reduced to one lane. A number of ramps will close, too. Try using Highway 62 or I-94 instead.

The work is part of a larger project that covers an eight-mile stretch. Eventually, the road will be resurfaced and repairs will be made to seven bridges between the Minnesota River in Eagan and 3rd Avenue in South St. Paul.

Drivers traveling near downtown Minneapolis can expect some significant delays this weekend, too.

The right lane of I-94 westbound between 25th Avenue and Cedar Avenue will be closed most of the day Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Unless you follow side roads, there's not a great alternate for that part of town.

In the southwest metro, Highway 212 is closing in Cologne this weekend. The eastbound lanes are shutting down between Highway 284 and County Road 36 for safety improvements. Watch for the closure beginning at 8 p.m. tonight until 5 a.m. Monday. Follow the detour along Highway 284, Highway 5, and County Road 41. The north and south entrances from County Road 41 to Highway 212 will close at the same time for two weeks while crews build two new reduced conflict intersections.

A traffic shift along Interstate 35 in Chisago County has been canceled for the weekend. The road has been down to one lane north of Harris for weeks. Eventually, all traffic will be shifted to the newly constructed southbound lanes.
