Interstate 94 in Minneapolis closes for part of the weekend

Updated: October 25, 2019 05:57 AM

Those traveling near downtown Minneapolis this weekend might get caught in some traffic snarls.

According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, Interstate 94 is shutting down in both directions between I-35W and Highway 280.

It won't last all weekend, though.

The road closes Saturday at 10 p.m. and should reopen around 4 p.m. Sunday.

The closure is for crews to install a temporary pedestrian bridge at 22nd Avenue. In August, a truck hit the 22nd Avenue and 25th Avenue bridges over I-94.

The posted detour takes drivers along Interstate 35W, Highway 36, and I-35E. Drivers traveling westbound will have access to Highway 280.

Meanwhile, nightly closures related to the bridge repair project began Thursday night along westbound I-94 at Riverside Avenue in Minneapolis.

Those closures will continue into early November, so drivers should prepare for another overnight shutdown Friday night. Riverside Avenue and 25th Avenue will close during the same timeframe.
