I-90 was temporarily closed, detoured at Austin due to water over the road

Interstate 90 was closed and detoured at Austin because of water over the road, the Minnesota Department of Transportation said Thursday afternoon.

Heavy rains Thursday caused high water in areas, including at I-90 in Austin.

MnDOT said traffic was being detoured between Sixth Street NE and 11th Drive in Austin. The westbound detour route was Hwy 56 north to Hwy 30 west to Hwy 218 south to I-90. The eastbound was the same route in reverse.

The detour and highway closure remained in place until the water levels lowered at 7:30 p.m. MnDOT said it inspected the road and the ditch area prior to reopening I-90 to ensure it was safe for travel.
