Signs have been up for over a week warning drivers in the southeast metro to prepare for major traffic delays along Interstate 494.
Starting Sunday evening, crews began placing barriers along the roadway in preparation for an upcoming traffic switch.
I-494 eastbound will be reduced to two lanes from 7th Avenue to Hardman Avenue in South St. Paul by the Monday morning commute. The ramp from Concord Street to eastbound 494 is closed as well. The new configuration will last into early August.
You're waking up to major changes to your drive in the SE metro! Watch for lane closures on 494 eastbound from Concord St to Hardman Ave. More details coming up at 5:35 and 6:35 on 5 Eyewitness News! pic.twitter.com/Trx85JCwpa— KSTP Traffic (@kstptraffic) June 17, 2019
The work is part of a major project to widen and resurface I-494. Lane closures first went into place on the westbound side near Highway 61 in April and will stay in place through late summer.
With these new restrictions in place, drivers can expect heavier-than-normal traffic on I-494 and I-94 eastbound during the afternoon commutes.
