A five-vehicle collision in Redwood Falls on Wednesday left 10 people hurt and one dead according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

At about 11:15 a.m., all five vehicles were northbound on Highway 71.

A Kia Optima with a 92-year-old driver, a Chevrolet Equinox carrying a 79-year-old driver and a 76-year-old passenger, and a Ford Edge with a 15-year-old driver and family onboard were stopped for a Minnesota Department of Transportation flagger.

A Chevrolet Suburban — with a 34-year-old woman, two 4-year-old girls and a 2-year-old girl inside — attempted to slow for the same flagger and was rear-ended by a Freightliner tractor-trailer. The semi caused a chain reaction, sending the Suburban into the three stopped vehicles.

The Optima's driver, a 92-year-old Redwood Falls woman, was taken to North Memorial in life-threatening condition. She later succumbed to her injuries. Ten other people were treated by Carris Health — Redwood Hospital. The tractor-trailer driver was uninjured.

All occupants were wearing seat belts. Investigators don't believe alcohol was involved but the investigation remains active.
