One person was killed in a crash that occurred early Sunday morning in Polk County, Wisconsin.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the department received a call at about 3:44 a.m. reporting the crash near the intersection of highways 8 and 63.


Officers learned a van was traveling northbound on Highway 63 at a high rate of speed and failed to stop at the intersection's stop sign. The van left the road and crashed into the treeline, authorities said.

The van's passenger called 911 and said the driver was trapped and not breathing, according to the sheriff's office.

An extrication was conducted and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger was transported to Regions Hospital. 

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the driver and passenger involved in the crash.

The incident remains under investigation.
