Driver killed as vehicle goes through fence, rolls down embankment in New Brighton

A man drove through a freeway fence and proceeded to roll down an embankment in New Brighton Sunday.

According to the State Patrol, the crash happened at 11:55 a.m. The report states a 2014 Ford Focus was traveling at a high rate of speed eastbound on 6th Street Northwest.


When the car came to an 'L' intersection on the roadway, the car drove through a freeway fence and rolled down an embankment several times, coming to a rest on the freeway ramp of 35W and E2. 

The driver, identified as 34-year-old Mathew Albertson from New Brighton, was killed in the crash. A passenger in the vehicle, Eric Michael Flahave, 34, suffered injuries not considered to be life-threatening. He was treated at the scene by emergency responders, according to the report. 

Authorities said alcohol was a factor in this crash. 

The investigation is ongoing.
