Driver Arrested After Striking Squad Car; Savage Police Officer Suffers Injuries

A Savage police officer was transported to the hospital with what were described as non-life threatening injuries Monday after his squad car was struck as he was assisting another motorist.

According to a release, the driver of the vehicle that struck officer Alex Casey's squad car was arrested by the state patrol on suspicion of driving while impaired and criminal vehicular operation. That individual was transported to Scott County Jail. But formal charges have not been filed.

The incident occurred around 11:51 p.m. Monday at Highway 13 and Dakota Avenue.

According to the release, Casey followed standard protocol by positioning his squad car to the rear of the stalled vehicle while attempting to provide a jump start. A car traveling east on Highway 13 struck the left rear side of the squad car. 

Casey, who was wearing his seat belt, was able to steer the squad car away from the stalled vehicle and its occupants.
