Drivers will be detoured around I-694, I-494 closures this weekend

Weekend road closures have become the norm around the metro.

This weekend will be no different with Interstates 694 and 494 shutting down.

In the northeast metro, ramp closures along I-694 and Rice Street have plagued drivers for months, but Ramsey County Project Engineer Nick Fischer said relief is coming.

"At the end of the year, end of fall basically, we'll have three of the four ramps open," Fischer said. "The only one will be the eastbound 694 on-ramp that will be closed for the winter."

This weekend, the Rice Street Bridge over I-694 is getting demolished.

The interstate will close in both directions from Snelling Avenue in Arden Hills to Rice Street in Shoreview. Drivers will be diverted to I-35W, Highway 36, and I-35E starting at 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday.

In the southeast metro, drivers are dealing with another shutdown of I-494.

The westbound lanes will close between I-35E and Highway 5 while crews install a pipe beneath the road. The road will close beginning at 9 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday. Traffic will be detoured along I-35E and Cedar Avenue. According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, several ramps will close starting at 7 p.m. Friday, but will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday:

  • Dodd Road to I-494 westbound
  • I-35E to I-494 westbound
  • Pilot Knob Road to I-494 westbound
