UPDATE: Trooper in 'Satisfactory' Condition, Lakeville Man in Serious Condition Following Head-On Crash

The Minnesota State Patrol confirms a state trooper was hit head-on Tuesday afternoon at Kenrick Avenue and 205th Street in Lakeville.

Lt. Tiffani Nielson is spokesperson and identified him as 35-year-old Sgt. Mike Krukowski of Oakdale.

Tuesday at the scene, Nielson said Krukowski had been on patrol traveling south on Kenrick Avenue in an SUV when a 2012 Chrysler 200, which had been traveling northbound in the right lane of Interstate 35 about 4 p.m. Tuesday, "the vehicle for unknown reasons went off the road to the right side, vaulted over the freeway fence and hit the state trooper head on at a high rate of speed," according to Nielson.

The driver of the Chrysler was identified as 29-year-old Wesley Paul Briggs of Lakeville. He was airlifted to North Memorial with what were described as life-threatening injuries.  Investigators pulled the black box from his white sedan which should reveal what speed he drove, if he attempted to brake at all an  if he was buckled in.  Authorities are also looking in a cause -- whether Briggs was distracted, had a medical event or was impaired.

Sgt. Krukowski did have a dash cam in his SUV, it was on but not necessarily recording because he was on routine patrol not called to an emergency with lights and sirens. Still, Lt. Nielson said they could cover important information.

Krukowski was transported by ambulance to Hennepin County Medical Center with what were described as non-life threatening injuries. The Facebook post said he was wearing his seat belt.

The crash happened right in front of Marek's Towing and Repair where Justin Sigerud was working at the time.

He ran over to Krukowski's vehicle to help because the trooper was trapped by the wreckage and couldn't get out on his own

"It took everything I had inside me to get the door open and help the trooper as much as I could," he said.
