The St. Croix County Sheriff's Office says it is still investigating a fatal crash last week in St. Joseph Township.

According to a release, the one-vehicle crash occurred on Highway 35 just north of Cedar Drive late Wednesday night.

The release said a preliminary investigation and witness statements indicate that a 2011 Ford Focus, driven by 35-year-old Brian Foster of Hudson, was southbound on the highway when the vehicle passed another at a high rate of speed. The Focus then reportedly went onto the west shoulder of the road and struck a guardrail.

That sent the car airborne and it landed back on the guardrail before striking a tree. Foster was reportedly not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

He was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul where he died of his injuries the following day.
