Bicyclist hit, killed in Brooklyn Park

Authorities were at the scene of a fatal crash involving a bicyclist in Brooklyn Park Wednesday morning.

The crash occurred on Zane Avenue near 65th Avenue, south of Interstate 94.

Police confirmed with KSTP a man on a bicycle was hit by a school bus at about 6:30 a.m. Authorities said the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said there were 10 children on the bus at the time of the crash. No one on the bus was hurt, police said. The children boarded a second bus and were taken to a nearby charter school where police said they will meet with counselors.

"There were several kids that were visibly upset, obviously, so we've taken measures to get them out of here, back to the school, and hopefully get some counselors to help them through the incident because, obviously, for everybody involved, this is very tragic," said Brooklyn Park Deputy Police Chief Mark Bruley.

KSTP Traffic Reporter Josie Smith said authorities had blocked the road, preventing traffic from getting through the scene.

Authorities are working to determine what led up to the crash.

"We'll look at the vehicle itself to make sure it was operating correctly, we'll obviously look at the driver to make sure they do care and there was nothing negligent about what they did that would have caused the accident," Bruley said.

The bus is owned by Lake Country Transportation. KSTP reached out to Lake Country, but the company declined to comment.
