Police are investigating a crash in Minnetonka that left a 3-year-old dead Thursday morning.
The crash happened at the intersection of Smetana and Feltl roads at 9:15 a.m.
Smetana Rd. shut down for hours Thursday morning following the crash.
Minnetonka police said the boy ran out into traffic, just as an 80-year-old man was driving by.
“It's tragic for this young boy, the family, the person driving the car this morning, our officers who arrived provided first aid to this kid,” said Chief Scott Boerboom. “Just a tragedy all around."
He told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS the boy lives right off of Smetana Road on Nolan Drive.
“He was being watched by a babysitter and he happened to get out of the house," said Boerboom.
The boy ran across two lanes of traffic as the babysitter, a family member, tried to catch up to him, according to the chief.
“We have a young 3-year-old who was enjoying life and just happened to be in an unfortunate situation,” he said.
Boerboom called the crash an accident.
The 80-year-old driver is a Minnetonka resident and has not been identified. Police say the driver is cooperating, and they do not believe the driver was impaired.
