3 major interstates closing this weekend

It will be a weekend filled with traffic woes as three major interstates in the metro will begin closing Friday night.

Interstate 35W is closing in both directions as the project between downtown Minneapolis and the Crosstown hits another major milestone.

According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, southbound traffic will be shifted to the newly reconstructed lanes of I-35W this weekend. A third lane going south will open from 24th Street to 46th Street.

The detour will take drivers to I-94, I-394, Highway 100, and Highway 62.

In St. Paul, I-94 westbound is closing for resurfacing between I-35E and Highway 280. Eventually, crews will get to the eastbound lanes, but those weekend closures won't happen until September. Drivers will be detoured to I-35E, Highway 36, and Highway 280.

Interstate 694 is shutting down this weekend as well.

Both directions will close between Snelling Avenue in Arden Hills and Rice Street in Shoreview for work on the Rice Street Bridge and on the new eastbound exit ramp to Rice Street. The detour takes drivers to I-35W, Highway 36, and I-35E.

MnDOT reports three more weekend closures are on the schedule for I-694 later this year and early next year so that crews can remove the existing Rice Street Bridge.

All three interstate closures will begin by 10 p.m. Friday and wrap up by 5 a.m. Monday. Please note that both the I-694 detour and I-94 detour takes drivers to Highway 36. Plan ahead for added traffic delays.

Meanwhile, in the west metro, Highway 12 will be closed at the Central Avenue Bridge in Wayzata. Motorists will be able to use the ramps at Central Avenue to return to Highway 12. The bridge itself will stay closed for four months while the structure is replaced.
