The driver and passenger in a car that struck a semi loaded with liquid oxygen early Sunday morning on a Wisconsin highway were both pronounced dead at the scene, authorities say.

In a Facebook post, the Barron County Sheriff's Department reported the crash occurred around 12:50 a.m. on Highway 53 north of Haugen. A vehicle driven by Mathew Krear, 28 of Chetek, was headed south and is believed to have crossed the median and struck the semi head on.

Both Krear and his passenger, 20-year-old Morgan Lasley of Chetek, were killed.



The driver of the semi, 43-year-old Jeremy Loeffelholz of Orfordville, was treated at the scene and released. The post said no oxygen was released in the incident and the highway was closed for around two hours.

The matter remains under investigation.
