1 killed, 1 seriously injured in Polk County collision

One person is dead and another is seriously injured after a crash Thursday morning in Polk County, Wisconsin.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Mains Crossing Avenue and 70th Street in the town of Apple River at 11:36 a.m.

Authorities determined a Mazda SUV was traveling north on 70th Street when it failed to stop at a stop sign and hit a Chrysler minivan traveling east on Mains Crossing Avenue.

The sheriff’s office said the female passenger of the Chrysler died at the scene. The male driver was seriously injured and was airlifted to a hospital where he remained in critical condition Thursday evening.

The female driver of the Mazda, the lone person in the vehicle, suffered possible injuries, according to the sheriff’s office.

Authorities said they believe inattentive driving by the Mazda’s driver contributed to the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
