Zimmer's 'favorite time of the year' as Vikings rookie minicamp begins

Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer called today his favorite time of the year. Vikings rookie minicamp is underway at TCO Performance Center in Eagan. It's Zimmer's first chance to see the Vikings newest draft class on the field as professionals.

"At the end of the day, you are trying to get them to be the best player they can possibly be. Whatever buttons you have to push, that is how you try to do it," Zimmer said on Friday. "You figure out what they respond best to. Like that safety (Harrison Smith), I used to have to correct him and I would come over, put my arm around him and I would talk real quiet to him and say, “Here is what you need to do. Try this, try that.” Then there are other guys that need a kick in the rear end."

One of the Vikings rookies that figures to make an immediate impact is 2nd round pick Irv Smith Jr. The tight end out of Alabama caught seven touchdown passes last year with the Crimson Tide.

"I'm just trying to learn the playbook," Smith said in Eagan. "Get in-tune with the guys, get to know the coaches better and just get a better relationship & have fun."
